On 23 March 2023 in New York on the margins of the United Nations 2023 Water Conference the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Tajikistan Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin met with the EU Special Representative for Central Asia Ms. Terhi Hakala.

At the meeting, the parties discussed issues of strengthening political, trade and economic cooperation, as well as the implementation of joint projects.

In addition, during the meeting the parties exchanged views on the issues related to the impact of climate change on water resources in various regions of the world and the prospects for cooperation in the promotion and implementation of the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028”.

On 23 March 2023 in New York, the Foreign Minister of Tajikistan Mr. Sirojiddin Muhriddin participated and addressed the high-level event entitled “Central Asia: Commitments to include in the Water Action Agenda”, organized by the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea and the World Bank with the support of the Government of Tajikistan in the framework of the UN 2023 Water Conference.

In his statement, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, noting the important mission of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea in providing the countries of the region with a platform for interaction on solving water and environmental issues, stated that the Tajik side, as part of its chairmanship in the Fund, is making every effort to further strengthen regional water cooperation and enhance the credibility of this unique organization.

Speaking about the problems associated with climate change, such as the glaciers melting, the river flow reduction, the increase in extreme hydrometeorological events, Minister Muhriddin noted that the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028” and the current historic UN Water Conference provide unique opportunity for all stakeholders to make new commitments in this direction.

On February 27, 2023, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Mr. Muzaffar Huseinzoda delivered a statement in the High-Level Segment of the 52nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland.

Deputy Minister reaffirmed Tajikistan’s commitment to cooperation with the United Nations structures, including the special procedures. It was emphasized that under the Government gender policy, women’s activism in the public sphere is being encouraged, and strengthening women’s political participation and increasing the number of women in public service is a priority of the National Development Strategy for the period up to 2030.

In continuation of his speech, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs mentioned the impact of the climate change and its consequences on the effective enjoyment of human rights for millions of people, as well as Tajikistan’s active promotion of an integrated approach to addressing water and climate issues. Particularly, it was highlighted that on 14 December 2022 the UNGA at the initiative of Tajikistan unanimously adopted the resolution to declare 2025 as the «International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation» and March 21 as the «World Day of Glaciers».

At the same time, taking into consideration that human rights to water and sanitation are essential for eradicating poverty and building peaceful and prosperous societies, Mr. Huseinzoda underlined the commitment of the Republic of Tajikistan to fulfil the obligations to improve access to clean drinking water and sanitation. In this regard, the UN Water Conference to be held in March 2023 and co-hosted by Tajikistan and the Netherlands was accentuated.
